SUMMARY:What to do When Shift Happens... Anticipating Change & Making Decisions
DESCRIPTION:Being in a highly visible role and leading other people can be incredibly difficult—and even more so when things unexpectedly change (i.e. when shift happens). This workshop was designed for emerging leaders\, but will help leaders of all experience levels anticipate and prepare for some of the shift you’ll deal with as a leader. \nForget about textbooks and leadership models from the 1900s. This interactive workshop will use contemporary examples from the worlds of business and pop culture—that’s right\, there’s a lot to learn from pop culture icons stumbling through their highly visible lives—to illustrate how to be an effective leader when the unexpected happens. \n\nPARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN HOW TO…\nAnticipate and assess team and organizational risks..\nBuild coalitions to support decision/change initiatives.\nMake critical decisions in times of uncertainty and imperfect information.\nCommunicate with confidence and clarity to build rapport and trust with key stakeholders. \n\nWHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN THIS WORKSHOP?\nProfessionals of all experience levels who make or significantly influence substantive decisions including…\nEmerging leaders (new managers & people transitioning from peer to leadership roles)\nManagers and leaders of all experience levels\nIndividuals with high-visibility roles or substantial influence on organizational decisions

Familiarity with relevant ethical codes that govern the construction industry is critical in order to fashion an appropriate response to those situations. A review of strengths and weaknesses of ethical codes as well as state and federal laws will be discussed. Case studies in engineering ethics will be discussed as well as the steps needed to make an ethical decision. \nSpeaker Bio: \nBlake Wentz\, PhD\, CPC\, LEED®-AP has a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and a Master’s degree in Engineering from the University of Nebraska. In 2013\, he obtained his PhD from Indiana State University. He owned and operated his family’s mechanical contracting business\, Wentz Plumbing and Heating\, in Lincoln\, NE for five years before becoming a college professor\, leading multiple\, large-scale and complex projects throughout Nebraska\, Iowa\, and Kansas. \nHe spent 15 years at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) serving as the Director of the Construction Management Program for five years. In 2013\, Blake assumed the role of Owners Representative and managed a portfolio of construction projects for the campus including: Grohmann Tower\, Renovations to MSOE Campus Center\, Dwight & Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall\, Raider Baseball Stadium\, and Viets Memorial Tower. In 2014\, he was promoted to Chair of the Civil\, Architectural Engineering & Construction Management Department where he served until leaving the university in 2020. Blake relocated to Chico\, CA in 2020 where he accepted the position of Dean of the College of Engineering\, Computer Science & Construction Management at California State University\, Chico. \nBlake was the faculty advisor for the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) Student Chapter at MSOE\, where his competition teams qualified for the national finals eight times. SUMMARY:Learn to Manage Customer Hostility
DESCRIPTION:Course Description \nSteve was raised in the mechanical contracting industry and spent over 15 years managing home warranty repairs. He discovered the sooner a problem can be moved to resolution and kept out of the hands of management\, rating services and/or lawyers\, the sooner contractors can move on to service the next customer. His experience and time spent in the field of HVAC work prepared him to be an effective trainer. \nSteve’s course will start with a dramatic\, real-life scenario to provide the audience with a picture of the mindset of the customer. Next\, he will introduce four classic stages of anger and outline what how to address each. \nThe four stages of anger include: \n\nCalm – No resolution needed.\nAnnoyed – Need resolution.\nFrustrated – The customer is asking for the company to bend\, provide more than what is normal.\nFurious – The customer wants to see the company suffer and they do not care how much money and time they must exhaust to get it.  This is caused by an egregious lack of concern on the company’s part.\n\nRealistically\, any person in a company who is answering a phone\, email\, instant message or greeting someone in person needs to understand that customers are classified at level two where stress has already escalated enough to begin communicating with your business. \nEveryone\, including customers\, can move through the four stages of anger. Steve will demonstrate this using many situations to address circumstances leading to each level of anger and verbal tools to seek a resolution. He will teach techniques on how to deal with customers\, provide service technicians and staff with the tools to better deal with each other so no one feels marginalized.
